Dear Gritty VA:

What are your thoughts on posting prices for services on your website? –LB

I see this question all the time and I’ve written several post on the topic. I’ll refer you to two of them below:

Also, Andy Beale, a well-known marketing consultant, also wrote on this topic. He’s, of course, in the marketing business (and, really, what better expertise to defer to on this subject), but the advice pertains to any kind of professional services and consulting business, including Virtual Assistance/Administrative Consulting:

Hi, very interesting topic. In the past I have been pro and con towards listing of prices on my website. I list retainer levels and project pricing availability, however, future and current clients need to ask for specific prices. Pricing varies by the type of work needed and the time frame. I charge different prices to look over someone’s cover letter versus reviewing a grant application/PowerPoint presentation or performing serious line editing of a book.

This also cuts down badgering by the customer who is into price-shopping and nickel and diming mentality.

I'm a straight-shooter, but I don't mince words. Don't be afraid to do likewise, but don't bother if you are thin-skinned. I only play with grown-ups and those who want to talk smart business. (If you want a pic to show with your comments, get a gravatar.)
